Ruthie Marchand is a representational painter based in Tucson, Arizona. She is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, where she earned her Master in Fine Arts. She obtained a BFA in Illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and studied observational visual art techniques at Watts Atelier. She is especially interested in the role of the figure and portrait in conveying a psychology with which the viewer can empathize. Her subjects are immersed in introspection and situated in an environment reflective of their inner psyche. An emotional sensibility is achieved through deliberate choices in light conditions and color in the composition. The subjects are given a dynamic form through the varied application of oil paint, which shifts between impasto expression and rendered detail. By translating ideas into images of intimate moments and allegorical spaces, she aims to give the viewer a means of connecting to her personal experiences.
