Ruthie Marchand (Ruth Holladay)
Ruthie Marchand is a representational painter based in Tucson, Arizona. She is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, where she earned her Master in Fine Arts. She obtained a BFA in Illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and studied observational visual art techniques at Watts Atelier.
Ruthie’s work is grounded in close attention to the effects of light and nuanced color relationships. These elements define form, naturalistic color, and emotional tone throughout her paintings. Her work explores how atmosphere and illumination reveal distinct mood and psychological presence in all of her subjects. She seeks to give each subject a dynamic presence through varied applications of oil paint, ranging from impasto expression to finely rendered detail.
While she began with a primary interest in portraiture, her practice has expanded to plein air painting, where she captures the striking forms and shifting light of the Sonoran Desert. She responds to the breadth of scenery and fleeting conditions through perceptive observation and decisive problem-solving in design. The skills developed through regular plein air practice, including compositional arrangement, color harmony, and rendering, carry directly into her studio work.
The figure and portrait remain central to Ruthie’s practice. She captures the distinct likeness of her subjects, who are often situated within environments that reflect inner psychological states. Emotional sensibility is achieved through deliberate choices in light, color, and atmosphere. These choices create intimate and contemplative spaces that invite connection to psychological experiences, particularly as they relate to feminine, spiritual, and contemporary experiences.
